What is eTwinning?

eTwinning is the community for schools in Europe. It is possible to connect to schools from 37 countries – inside the EU and some from outside the EU. There are almost 400.000 teachers from more than 160.000 schools registered in eTwinning.

The European eTwinning portal – www.etwinning.net – is divided into three parts:

1. Public area:

In the public area of etwinning.net you have access to a lot of possibilities:
  • Basic information about eTwinning
  • Learn how to get started
  • Search for registered schools
  • Be inspired by examples of best practice and project kits
  • Get information about workshops and online seminars
  • Register your school and yourself

2. eTwinning Live – personal area

When you have registered your school and yourself you get access to your personal area via your login to eTwinning.

This part is actually the “gold” of eTwinning.

The first thing you should do here is to go through your personal profile and check if there are things to change.

The most important thing in relation to starting a project is the area “Partner Forums”. First you have to decide whether you search partner(s) for an Erasmus+ partnership or an eTwinning project. After this you can search within age categories of the pupils going to be involved.

From here it is also possible to take part in events and professional development. When you have found one or more partners you can create a project. As soon as the National Support Services in the involved countries have accepted you application for the project you get access to a closed virtual collaboration area – TwinSpace – as shown.

3. TwinSpace – the virtual collaboration area

When you and your partner(s) have had your application for starting a project accepted you and your pupils get access to your own TwinSpace.

Here you and your pupils can:
  • Create webpages
  • Upload documents, photos, videos and other material
  • Discuss the development of the project in the Forum
  • Chat in a safe environment in the “Live” area
  • Book video conference facilities (Adobe Connect) in the “Live” section
  • Give different rights to members. Also pupils get administrator rights
